River Valley Region - Champaign County Farm Bureau
Twenty-eight young people received instruction and hands-on training to be certified in CPR and basic first aid in a class sponsored by the Champaign County Farm Bureau and Champaign Landmark, Inc. "This event was a complete success. The kids were eager to learn. The hands-on training, which included how to bandage injuries to learning CPR on the mannequins ... well, they were totally into it," said Jason Dagger, Farm Bureau's organization director for Champaign, Clark and Madison counties. The June 15 event was the first time the county Farm Bureau and Champaign Landmark have teamed up to sponsor the class. Mark Keller and Brendan Deere of the Urbana Fire Department and EMT squad were the instructors for the class held at Champaign Landmark's facility in Urbana. Some of the youths, who ranged in age from 11 to 18, took the class because they were baby-sitters while others needed the certification for jobs as lifeguards. The class was free and participants received a CPR/basic first aid instruction manual and safety kit. Champaign County Farm Bureau and Champaign Landmark are considering offering the course again this fall. Youths age 11 to 18 who are interested in taking the class should call the county Farm Bureau at 937-652-2135 or 800-424-2584. | |
