Farm Bureau counties help sponsor hunting, trapping expo

Four eastern Ohio Farm Bureau counties helped bring in speakers for the fifth annual Southeastern Ohio Hunting and Trapping Expo in Cambridge.

Region 3 Soil and Water Conservation District's Wildlife Specialists sponsored the Aug. 27 event, which featured hunting, trapping, dog retriever and taxidermy demonstrations. The expo also had BB gun, air rifle and bow shooting for youths.

Hunting and trapping experts talked about the ethics in hunting and how relations could be improved between landowners and hunters and trappers. Farm Bureaus in Belmont, Guernsey, Monroe and Noble counties helped sponsor the event and had a booth, said Betsy Anderson, Farm Bureau's organization director for those four counties. The Farm Bureau booth featured literature about hunting and trespassing, line fence laws, the Our Ohio brand and problems with the deer population.

"We have a lot of wildlife issues, and this type of event helps educate hunters about our concerns," Anderson said. "They want to hunt and we want to farm. We need the hunters to help control the wildlife population but we also need them to obey the laws. Trespassing is always a concern of landowners."
