Farm safety featured at 2006 Ohio Safety Congress, Youth Safety Congress

To assist farmers and those employed in the agriculture industry, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is offering several timely agricultural safety sessions at the Ohio Safety Congress March 29 at the Columbus Convention Center.

  • Here Comes the Sun – Find out how employers and their employees can be sun smart outdoors. Mary Fleming, coordinator, agricultural health, Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware will lead the session.

  • Grain Storage Rescue Demonstration – Safety rescuers will learn how new rescue techniques can be applied to save a life when seconds count. Douglas Kingman, professor at Illinois State University Department of Agriculture will lead the session.

  • Rocky the Frying Squirrel: a Hot Line Electrical Demonstration – Brad Markwood, South Central Power, will show how to protect yourself from electrical current gone astray.

  • Crystal Meth and the Farm Connection – Farms and communities continue to be at risk from criminals and addicts involved in meth production. Learn to identify signs of illegal activity and the dangers of meth production. Dennis Lowe, special agent, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, will lead the session.

Youth can also participate in special sessions March 30 for young workers, ages 16 to 18. The program takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and addresses topics such as ATV safety, driving under stressful situations and weather conditions, machinery and equipment safety, teen employee rights, fast-food employment safety, protective equipment for a variety of occupations and generational issues between adults and teens.
