Ohio increases minimum wage

Published on 04/17/2006

Last month, Gov. Bob Taft signed a bill that will increase Ohio's minimum wage from $4.25 per hour to $5.15. The bill goes into effect in late June.

"It basically tags Ohio minimum wage to the federal minimum wage going forward. As the federal minimum wage goes up, ours will too," said Rocky Black, OFBF director of legislative affairs.

Black said the increase is likely to have the most impact on industries such as fast food and retail and that the bill preserves the minimum wage exemptions for agriculture.

"Frankly, nobody's paying that low for any kind of labor (in agriculture)," he said.
