6th Congressional District candidates discuss platforms

Belmont County residents got to meet and hear from the candidates running for the 6th Congressional District seat.

On March 15, about 50 people gathered in Barnesville High School's cafeteria to hear from six of the candidates running for the seat currently held by Democrat Ted Strickland, who is running for governor. Belmont County Farm Bureau hosted the two-hour program.

Each of the candidates had 10 minutes to present his platform and about five minutes to answer questions from the audience. Several of the questions dealt with rural issues, gun rights, technology for Belmont County and longwall mining.

Floyd Simpson, government affairs chair for Belmont County Farm Bureau, set up the meeting.

"I thought it went excellent. It was great to hear what the candidates' ideas were for the Ohio Valley area. Some were very well versed about Belmont County," said Betsy Anderson, organization director for Belmont, Guernsey, Monroe and Noble counties.
