If you find a strange container in your field, think first before picking it up. It could be part of a methamphetamine lab and explode in your face. These words of advice were offered by Scott Duff, a meth eradication expert with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. He spoke March 25 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison as part of a workers' comp session sponsored by Farm Bureau's Carroll, Harrison, Jefferson and Tuscarawas counties. Duff described the growing problem of meth labs in Ohio and how thieves will do anything to get their hands on anhydrous ammonia, a key ingredient for the drug. He showed the 85 people in attendance a video of a person stealing anhydrous ammonia, getting burned and then going right back to the anhydrous ammonia tank because he was so desperate to get the chemical. Some of the farmers said they were surprised to learn that part of a meth lab could end up on their property and that they could get hurt from picking up a container. The session ran from 8 a.m. to noon and also included a blood screening provided by the hospital, continental style breakfast and at least 30 door prizes that focused on safety. | |
