The Athens County Farm Bureau along with the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District and OSU Extension held the first "drive-it-yourself" tour on April 22. The tour was set up to allow participants to catch a glimpse of Athens County’s diverse agriculture heritage. Several stops highlighted the tour such as the Carbondale Doser, which is an acid mine draining treatment unit. Another stop was at the Colde Comfort Farm, where participants learned about the farm’s maple syrup production. The third stop on the tour was the Cline Farm, operated by Curt and Wendy Cline. The couple is utilizing conservation practices to make the farm more productive. They’re raising 150 sheep in a rotational grazing system, and the stop featured GPS precision farming and other agriculture innovations. "The tour was a great success for its first year," said Jill Smith, organization director for Athens, Meigs, Gallia and Lawrence counties. | |
