Scioto County Farm Bureau receives AFBF funding

The American Farm Bureau Federation recently awarded Scioto County a mini-grant of $500 from the White-Reinhardt Fund for Education for agriculture literacy projects.

This is the second year AFBF has awarded this grant to the county.

Kim Harless, organization director for Scioto, Jackson, Pike and Vinton counties, said the grant money was used for the third annual Agriculture Adventure Day held at the Scioto County fairgrounds. The one-day event is free for all fourth-graders from various rural and city schools. It features 17 displays that teach children about various aspects of agriculture.

"The kids are just amazed," Harless said. "We let them milk goats, they can grind grain into flour."

Harless said kids also learned about sheep shearing, various commodities and ATV safety. The children are also treated to a hayride and get to pet llamas.

The event is co-sponsored by OSU Extension and Ohio Farm Bureau. It’s limited to 500 children.

Last year five Ohio counties out of 25 nationwide received the mini-grant.
