A day in the classroom

Published on 06/12/2006

Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Executive Vice President Jack Fisher tutored third graders at Southwood Elementary School in Columbus as part of Columbus Public Schools’ "Principal for a Day" program May 11.

Principal for a Day provides business and community leaders a first-hand experience in the daily life of a Columbus school. Leaders are able to see the realities, concerns and issues facing schools today. Fisher shadowed Southwood Principal Carla Gale. In addition to tutoring, Fisher read to kindergarten and first grade students, toured the school and had time to talk with the principal. A Town Hall meeting concluded the day; Fisher and other business leaders who participated in the program met to share their observations. Nationwide Chief Executive Officer Jerry Jurgensen and Gene Harris, superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, led the roundtable discussions.

As part of the day, Ohio Farm Bureau donated agriculture-related books and a Lessons in Economics kit to the school. Photo by Natalie Walston
