ATVs part of new policy for Farm Bureau members

Published on 06/12/2006

With more than 15 million people now using all-terrain vehicles for work and fun, ATVs are kicking up more dirt than ever.

Their zooming popularity also has prompted more people to ask about ATV insurance coverage because accidents can happen. Ohio Farm Bureau members now have access to a new type of ATV coverage with special Farm Bureau member rates.

ATVs are included in the new Rev & RideSM coverage from Nationwide InsuranceSM, which comes with a 5 percent discount for OFBF members, said Dan Rapp, OFBF director of member services. Additional discounts may apply for insuring multiple vehicles, combining other Nationwide® policies with Rev & Ride and completing an ATV safety program.

Nationwide developed Rev & Ride specifically for ATVs and other specialty vehicles, such as motorcycles and snowmobiles, Rapp said.

Available coverages include protection against losses from collisions and vandalism. Theft of your ATV is also available as part of the Rev & Ride coverage, which is important because if it’s stolen a homeowner policy may not cover it. The homeowner policy also won’t cover an ATV once it’s driven off your property.

Safety first
In addition to providing ATV coverages, Nationwide has worked through Ohio Farm Bureau to promote ATV safety. Nationwide featured an ATV safety exhibit as part of the Land and Living exhibit at the Ohio State Fair last year. Among the safety points emphasized in the display:

  • Wear a helmet. It’s the only way to effectively prevent head and brain injuries in a crash.
  • Maintain moderate to low speeds – ATVs are not safe at high speeds.
  • One rider at a time. Although many ATVs may have room for an extra rider, most manufacturers recommend only one rider at a time.
  • Check to make sure that your ATV is age-appropriate for younger riders.
  • Complete an ATV safety program.
