COSI on Wheels rolls into Wyandot County
Students learn farming first-hand

Hands-on learning at a recent COSI on Wheels Agriculture Adventure event in Wyandot County meant milking a fake cow by hand and grinding wheat into flour.

Those were just two things that third, fourth and fifth graders from Carey, Mohawk and Upper Sandusky schools got to do on March 28 and 29. Students from FFA chapters at those schools helped guide more than 800 school children who participated in the event.

Agriculture Adventures is one of eight traveling shows in the COSI on Wheels program. A COSI demonstrator introduced the students to where food comes from, followed by hands-on sessions. The program is designed to get children to ask questions and explore science, not to mention learn the importance of agriculture.

While students learned to milk cows by hand, instructors also showed how a vacuum milking machine works. In addition, students tested soil samples using a pH indicator and chose which crops would go best in that soil.

The Wyandot County Soil and Water Conservation, Wyandot County Farm Bureau and the Farm Service Agency sponsored the event.
