Farm Bureau youths awarded scholarships

Ohio Farm Bureau recently awarded four $1,000 Darwin Bryan Scholarships and a scholarship at Ohio State University.

Rose Dudgeon, Laura Johnson, Holly Sparks and Kayla Weaver are this year’s Darwin Bryan Scholarship winners. The Darwin Bryan Scholarship Fund was established in 1985 in honor of Darwin R. Bryan whose enthusiastic leadership during his 37 years of service to the organization has been an inspiration to rural youth throughout Ohio. The scholarship fund assists students who have been active in the Farm Bureau youth program and/or whose parents are Farm Bureau members.

Dudgeon of Knox County is the daughter of R. Norman Dudgeon and Margaret Dudgeon. She is a 2004 graduate of East Knox High School and currently attends Ohio State University, majoring in agricultural education. She is a former Ohio FFA president and has been involved in 4-H and was a Young Farmer Discussion Meet finalist and attended the Key Farmer trip in February.

Johnson of Franklin County is the daughter of William and Denise Johnson. She is a June graduate of Upper Arlington High School. She has been accepted to Cornell University and intends to study plant biology-biotechnology. She was an intern at Ohio Farm Bureau during the Ohio State Fair, a counselor for the B-WISER Girls Science Camp, and an active member of the Franklin County Rascals youth council. She has won numerous science awards at the local and state levels and was one of 96 presenters at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

Sparks of Butler County is the daughter of Jackie Sparks and Beverly Foutz. She is a 2005 graduate of Talawanda High School and attends Cincinnati State University where she is studying baking and pastry arts technology. She recently completed her second term on the State Youth Committee and represented Farm Bureau Youth on the Ohio State Fair Jr. Fair Board. She is active in Butler County Butlers and Maids youth council. It is her goal to open her own bakery and be a mentor to young people through her business.

Kayla Weaver of Wyandot County is the daughter of Jeff and Darlene Weaver. She is a June graduate of Upper Sandusky High School. She will attend Ohio State University and major in agricultural education. She has been active in FFA, 4-H and Farm Bureau Youth. She has been a 4-H camp counselor and served as Wyandot County Farm Bureau information coordinator.

Ohio Farm Bureau Scholarship
Kathryn Ellis of Clinton County has been awarded the $1,500 Ohio Farm Bureau Scholarship for the 2006-2007 school year. Ellis is a junior at Ohio State University majoring in agribusiness and applied economics. She is a member of the Agribusiness club and Alpha Zeta Partners honorary. She is a 2003 graduate of East Clinton High School and plans to attend graduate school to study finance. She is the daughter of Wayne and Susan Ellis. The Ohio Farm Bureau scholarship is open to Agribusiness and Applied Economics majors and is awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership and potential contribution to the agricultural industry.
