Children learn farm safety tips from the experts

Some adults might not know what to do if they're first at the scene of a farm accident. But children in Wayne County recently learned they should gather facts from the accident victim when possible, then call 911 and tell the dispatcher exactly what happened.

The children learned such a lesson at the 2006 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day sponsored by Wayne County Farm Bureau. Local fire departments also donated their time and expertise to teach children to think about safety awareness.

"When children walk out the door, telling their parents about all of the things that they saw and did during the program, that makes it a success. This program could save a life," said Greg Sautter, safety committee chairman with Wayne County Farm Bureau.

The Wayne County Underwater Search and Rescue Team showed some of the tools it uses in emergencies. The volunteer team works with police and fire departments for body recovery, evidence recovery and finding stolen property beneath the water.

Also on hand was a large animal veterinarian who talked about the importance of safety around livestock. Dr. Mike Geiger stressed the importance of having an escape route when dealing with animals.

Other topics included fire safety, household chemical safety and bicycle safety.
