Cincinnati kids get the feel of a farm

Many people who work with children have learned that some kids these days don't know where there food comes from; some think chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

To reach out to some inner city and suburban students, the Hamilton County Farm Bureau and the Cincinnati Horticulture Society invited more than 300 elementary students from seven schools in the Cincinnati area to a Farm festival and Ag Education day at Coney Island Sept. 29. The ag day was held during the Cincinnati Fall Flower Show.

At the event students learned the basics of farming, recycling, food, nutrition and living sciences. Katie Grove, organization director for Montgomery, Warren, Butler and Hamilton counties, said the display for kids was similar to Ohio State Fair displays done by OFBF; children learned how syrup is harvested, how cows are milked and how wool is spun into clothing. Students also got a glimpse of rare poultry, rabbits and other smaller farm animals.
