Mahoning County hosts conservation seminar, young farmer outing

The Mahoning County Farm Bureau, in conjunction with the Mahoning County Soil & Water Conservation district, recently hosted a seminar on Choices to Help Preserve Farmland. More than 50 people from Mahoning, Trumbull, Stark, Columbiana, Portage and Guernsey counties were in attendance.

At the seminar, OFBF Senior Director of Local Affairs Larry Gearhardt explained the Current Agricultural Use Valuation (CAUV) program, agricultural districts and Ohio Forest Tax Law.

Also on hand were Michael Bailey from the Office of Farmland Trust at the Ohio Department of Agriculture; Brian Williams of American Farmland Trust; Mark Skowronski of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Mahoning County auditor and deputy appraiser.

Meanwhile, on Jan. 27, the Mahoning County Farm Bureau held an outing for multi-county young farmers and families at the Youngstown Steelhounds/Rio Grande Killer Bees ice hockey game. Participants were treated to a gourmet dinner before the game. Tiffany Chapman from Columbiana County won the Steelhounds autographed jersey from the Toss a Puck contest.
