Packed house for Boehner farm forum

Published on 03/22/2007

The upcoming farm bill, the impacts of rising corn prices and an appearance by the U.S. secretary of agriculture helped make Rep. John Boehner's annual farm forum the largest in recent years. Above, Boehner, R-West Chester, introduces Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns who laid out the administration's farm bill proposal at the Miami County event earlier this month. Boehner, the House minority leader, categorized the USDA's proposal as "doable" but said the debate would be over the details. He expects there will be a renewable fuels section of the farm bill and that ongoing world trade negotiations are not likely to play a large role in the discussion. Of the trade talks, Boehner said "There are some signs of life, but very little." Boehner noted there will likely be some type of payment limit in the farm bill, which he gave a 50 percent chance of being written this year. He also discussed immigration, saying that any reform must strengthen border security and provide a "guest worker program with solid identification."
