Agriculture was the topic of a recent Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event.

The Shelby County Farm Bureau, along with the Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation District, worked together to help sponsor the March 15 event. The monthly gatherings for chamber members help them learn more about county businesses.

"Agriculture is BIG Business in Shelby County" was the theme of the event, which was held at the county’s Agriculture Service Center.

"The goal of the event was to create awareness and tell the agriculture story in our county," said Jill Smith, organization director for Shelby, Allen, Auglaize and Mercer counties. Several commodity and ag entities had displays during the open house. Agriculture groups such as the Ohio Soybean Council, Ohio Corn Growers Association, Shelby County Cattlemen’s Association, Pork Producers and Dairy Boosters talked about their products and individual industries. The groups also held a "Taste of Shelby County" with commodity samples a part of the mix.

"We were very excited about the turnout and positive feedback we received from our fellow businessman," said Joyce Peters, chairwoman of Shelby County Farm Bureau’s promotion and education.

The county Farm Bureau plans to hold the event again next year.
