Our Ohio: Telling Agriculture’s StoryPublished on 06/14/2007 Request: Special events -- Members, member farm markets and county Farm Bureaus have the opportunity to submit special events and festivals to be included on the events calendar at OurOhio.org. Events can be submitted online at OurOhio.org. From the home page, click on the About the map section under counties, then Submit an event. Questions? Contact Our Ohio Communications Editor Lynn Snyder at lsnyder@ofbf.org or call 614-246-8232. Upcoming Media -- Be sure to watch Our Ohio on all Ohio public television stations each week. Recent segments have highlighted maple syrup production, apple cider and carrots. Upcoming segments will include features on gardening, dairy production, honey bees and farmers’ markets. Check local listings for days and times of broadcast on your local public television station. A list of public television and their regular broadcast times is available at OurOhio.org. Click on television, then where to watch. Advertising – Our Ohio is placing print ads in some big-time publications this summer. The ads promote buying local opportunities using the "Choose the food less traveled" theme and local farm stories. So far, ads will be appearing in Ohio Magazine, Cleveland Magazine, Cincinnati Magazine, Northern Ohio Live and Feast and in Ohio editions of national magazines Ladies’ Home Journal and Country Living. Various ads will be appearing in select issues from June through August. Also, watch for the July issue of Ohio Magazine where Our Ohio and local foods will be featured in an eight-page special section within the magazine. Education Programs – Many members host school groups to their businesses over the course of the school year. Events like these are good for business but also are an opportunity to connect students to agriculture. The school year may be over now, but when planning for this fall, consider Ohio Farm Bureau’s many education resources available to help connect what is done on the farm to Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. One resource is an activity guide called "to market, to market: an interactive program for economics education." This booklet outlines several hands-on activities to do with students once they come to the farm or business and then connects the activities to agriculture and education standards.
