Bipartisan seminar to aid future candidates

Published on 06/14/2007

No matter one’s political affiliation, winning an election may rest upon the ability to effectively convey a theme or message to the public. Through the sponsorship of Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Nationwide Insurance and eight other professional organizations, the 2007 Campaign Management Seminar to be held July 17-18 at the Hilton Garden Inn – Polaris in Columbus could give a candidate a competitive edge over an opponent.

"This is a bipartisan seminar that was developed by the American Farm Bureau Federation with input from political consultants and staff members of both the Democratic and Republican parties," OFBF Director of Political Education Doug Foxx said.

Cody Lyon, director of grassroots and policy advocacy for American Farm Bureau, will facilitate the seminar, bringing election hopefuls and political professionals together with a goal of teaching candidates how to run a winning campaign.

Lyon holds degrees in political science, history and a masters of public administration from the University of Georgia. He also worked as voter education coordinator with the Office of Secretary of the state of Georgia.

"Cody has a wealth of knowledge about political campaigns. This will be a great opportunity for candidates to ramp up their campaign plans and put them in a better position to win," Foxx said.

"A Winning Candidate," "A Winning Campaign Theme" and "A Winning Financial Plan" are day one’s topics, running from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Participants will be videotaped and have their performance analyzed through an aggressive mock candidate interview. Day two topics include "A Winning Organization" and "A Winning Campaign."

The seminar is limited to 50 people. A $150 fee covers materials, meals and conference room, but not overnight accommodations. A special rate of $119 per night will be guaranteed to guests at the Hilton Garden Inn if reservations are made by June 17.
