The Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation has selected five scholarship recipients for the Darwin Bryan Scholarship Program, which honors Darwin R. Bryan who led the Farm Bureau Youth program for 37 years. The scholarship fund assists students who have been active in the Farm Bureau youth program and/or whose parents are Farm Bureau members.

Emily Donaldson, daughter of Alan and Linda Donaldson of Clark County, is a recent graduate of Greenon High School. She plans to study science to support her goal of becoming a veterinarian specializing in large animal care.

Christina Egner, daughter of Kelvin and Jackie Egner of Richland County, is a graduate of Shelby Senior High School. She is currently pursuing a degree in animal sciences at Ohio State University. "I plan to obtain my Ph.D. in animal science to become a beef scientist," Egner wrote in her application.

Joshua Hamric is the son of David and Lin Hamric of Coshocton County, and is a graduate of River View High School. He is currently pursing studies in animal sciences at the Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster with plans to continue work at Ohio State University. "I plan to work as a laboratory researcher primarily with swine and genetics," he said.

William Johnson is the son of Bill and Denise Johnson of Franklin County. He is a graduate of Upper Arlington High School and is involved in a variety of volunteer leadership activities in both traditional urban and rural settings. "I want to be an engineer. Not the stereotypical reclusive engineer, but one that uses his leadership and public speaking skills to lead other engineers in large projects," he said.

Abigail Snyder is the daughter of Tom and Pamela Petzel Snyder of Ross County. She is a graduate of Zane Trace High School and will be a food science major at Ohio State University. "Farms will continue to become more efficient with advancements in technology," Snyder wrote in her application. "And, the perception of what agriculture is will continue to evolve as more people are positively affected by the progress achieved through research."

Scholarships also were awarded in the Women’s Leadership in Agriculture Scholarship Program with a grant from the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee. The fund supports academic institutions, social service and charitable organizations providing opportunities "to ennoble, to uplift and to strengthen the lives of young women."

Katherine Crist, daughter of Dennis and Barbara Crist of Pickaway County, is a recent graduate of Circleville High School. She is planning to pursue a degree in animal sciences at Ohio State University. "I was sure that I was born to live on a farm but was never able," Crist said in her competition essay. "Later, I joined 4-H and found my niche. I realize how important they (large farm animals) are to our way of life and to agriculture. Large animal veterinarians are becoming hard to find these days, and I would like to help by adding myself to the list."

Hanna Lemle, daughter of Roger and Karen Lemle of Lucas County, is a graduate of Anthony Wayne High School. She will be pursuing a degree in animal sciences at Ohio State University. "I love science, animals, people and agriculture," Lemle said in her essay. "Being a veterinarian would give me the opportunity to mix production with science, marketing and communication," she said.

Tricia Pugh of Stark County is the daughter of Dean and Bobbi Pugh and is a graduate of Louisville High School. She has a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences and is currently involved in graduate level studies in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State University. "From the farm to the fork, one of my career goals as a veterinarian is to ensure that wholesome and quality products reach the dinner plate," Pugh said in her essay. "I will view every day as an opportunity to be part of a profession that is responsible for elevating health standards for people and livestock."
