Pike County shows third graders importance of agriculture

Approximately 400 third graders converged upon the Pike County Fairgrounds to attend Pike County Farm Bureau’s 10th annual Agriculture Awareness Day on April 18. In conjunction with local sponsors, the free field day is aimed at teaching students and their parents about the role agriculture plays in their lives. Highlights of the event included a presentation on Lawn Mower Safety given by Pike County Farm Bureau Safety Chair Dan Corcoran, and Tadd Nicholson from the Ohio Corn Growers Association discussed the importance of biodegradable products made from corn. Ag Awareness Day Chairperson and Information Coordinator for Pike County Farm Bureau Laura Corcoran showed children different breeds of chickens and explained how eggs are incubated, while Farm Bureau Organization Director Jessica Miller gave a presentation on horses. Essay and nametag contests were held complete with prizes for the winners.

According to Corcoran, the event is the pride of the Pike County Farm Bureau. "It is also a great opportunity to make sure that our third graders understand that their food comes from the farm, not the grocery store," she said.
