COLUMBUS, Ohio (OFBF) - The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) is offering Ohio teachers an in-depth opportunity this summer to explore agriculture while equipping them with educational resources to use in the classroom.

“Land and Living: A Workshop for Teachers,” is a two-session field trip that will give teachers insight on how farming technology has changed, different techniques used to protect the environment, food and agriculture programs offered at Ohio State University and misconceptions regarding food production.

Teachers will take away resources to supplement their experience on the tours that are adaptable to most grade levels, and help meet academic content standards in social studies, environmental science and other content areas.

“We have a great lineup of private farms for teachers to visit, where they will have opportunities to talk to farmers about how they are raising livestock today and what they are doing to be good stewards of the land,” OFBF Education Specialist Judy Roush said.

Teachers may choose to participate in one or both of the following sessions:

Session I – July 28 and 29: A chartered motor coach bus will transport participants from Glacier Ridge Metro Park in Union County to several farms, returning to the park at 3:30. Overnight accommodations will be arranged. Registration is $150 and includes hotel, transportation, meals and classroom materials.

Session II – August 7 and 8: A one-day visit to OSU’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (OSU-CFAES) and a one-day visit to the Ohio State Fair. Registration is $50 and includes lunches and classroom materials.

Optional Graduate credits for participation in each session may be earned from Ashland University at an additional price of $163.

“Land and Living: A Workshop for Teachers” is partially funded by grants provided by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Soybean Council. The workshop is cosponsored by OFBF, Our Ohio, Ashland University, the Ohio Livestock Coalition, Ohio Metro Parks and OSU-CFAES.
