Larry Gearhardt

Gearhardt appointed to AFBF General Counsel Advisory Committee

The American Farm Bureau Federation’s Board of Directors has appointed three new members to serve on the AFBF General Counsel Advisory Committee through 2011. The new members include: John Bell, governmental affairs counsel, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau; Larry Gearhardt, senior director of legal and local affairs, Ohio Farm Bureau; and Ken Hamilton, executive vice president, Wyoming Farm Bureau.

AFBF has a distinguished history of selective participation in litigation matters that implement and advance Farm Bureau’s policies. The General Counsel Advisory Committee evaluates individual case requests from all sectors while assisting with the development of legal strategies for AFBF.

The three new members join another new addition to the advisory committee this year. Marla Peek, director of regulatory affairs for the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, joined the group in July 2009. In all, the advisory committee is comprised of nine individuals – eight from state Farm Bureaus (serving two year terms) and a ninth position held by AFBF Public Policy Executive Director, Mark Maslyn. Julie Anna Potts, AFBF general counsel and secretary, chairs the committee.

While making the new appointments, the AFBF Board recognized the following outgoing members for their service on the advisory committee: Keith Gray, former director of national affairs, Alabama Farmers Federation; Rick Keller, executive vice president/CEO, Idaho Farm Bureau; Art McTighe, general counsel, New Jersey Farm Bureau; and David VanderHaagen, general counsel, Michigan Farm Bureau.
