Livestock issues discussed on ‘Town Hall Ohio’

For Immediate Release

May 6, 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio (OFBF) – Modern livestock agriculture and its adversaries are highlighted on this week’s episode of Town Hall Ohio.  The episode was recorded at the annual meeting of the Ohio Livestock Coalition (OLC).

David Martosko of the Center for Consumer Freedom shares his views on critics of modern agriculture such as Michael Pollan of Food, Inc. fame.  He also discusses the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and its efforts to mislead the public about its true agenda.  Martosko authors the popular Web site, which seeks to educate the public about the controversial animal rights group.

Tim Amlaw of the American Humane Association (AHA) explains his group’s efforts to work with—not against—livestock farmers to ensure the proper care of their animals.  AHA was a strong supporter of Issue 2 in the November 2009 election, which established the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board.

Robert Boggs, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, also joins the program to discuss the Livestock Care Standards Board.  Boggs shares his goals for the board and explains how it will make and enforce standards for farm animal care.  As director of ODA, Boggs serves as the board’s chair.

Wyandot County hog farmer Randy Brown shares his insight into modern livestock production and discusses how terms like “factory farm” are carelessly used by animal rights activists.  Brown was the recipient of the OLC’s Good Neighbor of the Year award, which recognizes farmers who work to maintain positive relationships with those who live near their operations.
