May 27, 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio (OFBF) – The plight of countless millions of people suffering from hunger is the topic of this week’s Town Hall Ohio.  The episode was recorded at Scarlet and Gray Ag Day at Ohio State University.

Julie Borlaug—granddaughter of Nobel Prize-winning agronomist Norman Borlaug and chair of the Board of Advisors for the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture—discusses her grandfather’s legacy and her organization’s continuing efforts to fight world hunger.

Dr. Per Pinstrup-Andersen of Cornell University talks about his work to help governments of developing countries improve the nutrition of their citizens.  Pinstrup-Andersen was the recipient of the 2001 World Food Prize for his work in food rationing and subsidy programs.

Sharon Norton of the Mathile Institute explains her organization’s work to promote innovative and sustainable solutions to eliminate malnutrition in impoverished countries. She also discusses Mathile’s Hunger Fighters initiative, which seeks to educate people about the life and work of Norman Borlaug.

Micki Zartman of Ohio State University talks about Scarlet and Gray Ag Day, the yearly event in which hundreds of Columbus-area students learn about modern agriculture through hands-on laboratory activities.
