Ohioans for Humane Farms
A group organized and funded by the Washington, D.C.-based Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) that is working to write HSUS policies on farm animals into the Ohio constitution.
As the nation’s largest animal rights organization gathers signatures to place constitutional restrictions on livestock farming in Ohio, farmers are organizing in response.Ohioans for Livestock Care, the coalition that worked to establish the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board last year, has launched its own petition drive to show support for Ohio’s farming community.
The petition is available on the campaign website www.ohiolivestockcare.com and can be signed by any Ohioan.Farmers are encouraged to sign and circulate the petition with family and friends who believe decisions about Ohio’s farms should be made by Ohioans and not Washington, D.C. lobbyists. The petition will be used to send a message that a proposed November ballot measure on livestock farming backed by animal rights activists is unnecessary.
The pro-farmer petition calls for giving the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board a chance to fulfill its charge of developing comprehensive and balanced standards for animal care in Ohio.
In contrast, the proposal offered by the Washington-based Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) would force the livestock board to adopt HSUS policies without debate.
An HSUS backed group called Ohioans for Humane Farms has until the end of this month to collect more than 402,000 valid signatures to get its measure on the November ballot. The group has submitted election forms that will allow it to utilize paid petition circulators. HSUS also recently sued the Ohio secretary of state to ensure signature gatherers could be brought in from out-of-state.
The Ohioans for Livestock Care petition is the first step in what will be a highly organized grassroots campaign to defeat the animal rights measure should it make the ballot.
