Minges Show Cattle

Meet a Farmer – Cathy Minges and Family

Greeting from Morgan Township. We are Allen and Cathy Minges, also known as Minges Show Cattle. We raise beef cattle, with a focus on club calves and breeding stock.

Both of us come from farm families and Allen farmed full-time for 22 years before taking an off the farm job in 1998 with Scherzinger Drilling. He now works a full-time job as well as farms 100 acres of corn and soybeans with another 55 acres in hay. We keep our herd at a manageable size of 20-25 purebred and crossbred cows. All of our cows are A/I (artificially inseminated). I am the office manager for Butler County Farm Bureau.

Farming for us has changed a lot in 30 years. We started as mostly grain farmers and also raised hogs and cattle. Mostly feeders, fat cattle and later bucket calves. In 1991 we started focusing more on building a small cow herd after our kids were showing cattle in 4-H and have concentrated in the direction of club calves ever since. Our son Scott (29) helps Allen with the farming and is instrumental with our cattle business. He is part owner on some of the cows and does all the clipping and most of the A/I breeding. He works full-time for a cattle farm in Indiana and lives there on the farm. Scott manages their 125 head purebred seedstock cow herd. His wife Sheri is a vet tech and office manager for Bright Veterinary Clinic in Bright, IN. They are a vet clinic that will treat large animals and make farm calls. His cattle farm uses their vet practice to care for their cattle… that is how they met. Sheri not only works full-time, but she is also finishing a bachelors degree with Purdue University, attending classes on Saturdays and other on-line classes.  They have one son Cole, age 3, and are expecting a baby around June 1. Our daughter Carrie (26) is married to Wyatt Baker and they live on a farm in Fairbanks, IN, about 25 miles south of Terre Haute. She graduated from Miami University and is a teacher at Farmersburg Elementary in Sullivan County, IN. Wyatt raises cattle and sells numerous club calves all over the country. They met showing cattle in Louisville, KY. They have a 100 head cow herd, mainly crossbred cows and purebreds. Carrie helps us when she can, usually at shows or sales. Their cattle business keeps them very busy and on the go.

We are members of the Butler County Cattlemen’s Assn., Ohio Cattlemen’s Assn., Indiana Cattlemen’s Assn. and other various breed associations for registering cattle. I’m an avid flower gardener and spend many hours planning, planting and tending my flowerbeds and also enjoy refinishing antique furniture.

Highlights from our cattle business include the 2000 Ohio State Fair Grand Champion Prospect Heifer, 2001 OCA Best Champion Cross Bred Heifer, 2008 Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the Hoosier Beef Congress, as well as other numerous county fairs, expos, and other show champions. We’ve sold cattle to all parts of the country and have enjoyed following the success those owners have achieved, especially the kids in 4-H and FFA.
