Meet a Farmer- Diary of Karen Hiltbrand

Hope everyone’s Thanksgiving was well.  Mine was well, this past weekend was my first cattle show of the season and I did pretty well, I guess I can’t complain.  Although it was so cold we had a good time.  My heifer Lou Casey really surprised me and did very well for me. Recently all our chores at home have been changed around, I now alternate with my two siblings getting up and feeding the animals before school, and boy is it chilly.  It sure wakes me up though.

I’d like to take some time and talk about an issue that has come up in our county.  It is possible that the county will cut our budget that pays for our counties extension services.  When I say this I say all the money going toward 4-H, soil and water, as well as the master gardeners will be cut.

I can’t stress enough how important theses programs are to me as well as many, many individuals in my county.  I encourage any individual to contact our county commissioners to try and sway there thinking, so that they realize the impact if they decide to make these cuts.  The activities that I do through these programs make up a HUGE part of my life and are very, very important to me as well as many others.  I hope you will consider writing or e-mailing to help a good cause.

With love,

Karen Hiltbrand
