County Farm Bureaus invited to enter horticulture competition

Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) will be holding an official horticulture competition open to all county Farm Bureaus during the 2012 Ohio State Fair. The competition provides an opportunity to showcase agriculture in each of Ohio’s 88 counties through its theme, “Agriculture in our backyard.”

“We wanted to give county Farm Bureaus an opportunity to not only have a presence at the Ohio State Fair, but also create an opportunity for building community partnerships with volunteers, local greenhouse or anyone with an interest in the project,” said OFBF Director of Community Engagement Cara Lawson.

Each county Farm Bureau that competes will be provided a 16 inch planter to fill with a variety of plants and crops that demonstrate agriculture in its county, and the theme “Agriculture in our backyard.” Up to three nonliving items, such as toy tractors or rocks, can be used in the exhibit but all other materials used must be living plant material.

The planters will be on display in the Nationwide Donahey Ag and Hort Building during the Ohio State Fair, July 25- Aug. 5.

Several awards will be given. Ohio State Fair horticulture judges will award the top 10 exhibits, and a “People’s choice” award will be given to the county that receives the most votes from the general public during the fair. Other awards will be given throughout the fair by elected officials, dignitaries and other special guests.
