During the last week in March, the 2013 Salad Project began! Since then, at the Emerson Elementary in Sidney, you could find planters with sprouting plants in and outside the school. Vickie Peltier’s third grade class planted seeds in its planters outside the school including lettuce, spinach, radishes, onions, and peas. NEW THIS YEAR, single planters, constructed by Fort Loramie FFA members, inside had flowers grown for Mothers Day gifts!
Shelby Co. Farm Bureau teamed up with Shelby Soil and Water Conservation District again this year to help the kids plant, raise, and harvest vegetables for their Salad Party at the end of the school year. The kids take great pride in growing food they eventually eat and they learn a great deal in the process. This project was first started last year with great success and on May 22 was another great harvest leading to a delicious Salad Party!! And once again this year the project was funded through a American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture grant. Check back for more pictures!
SPECIAL THANKS!!! to Vickie Peltier for all of her help, cooperation, knowledge, and dedication to educating her students on the importance of this growing project! We wish her well as she retires from teaching… you will be greatly missed!!
