Pleased to Feed You, Danny Grant

My family: My wife Ellen, our son Jason and his wife Melissa and their children Jason, Lane and Gracie; Lauren and her husband Jason and their son Logan; and our daughter Leah.

When did you join Farm Bureau and how have you been involved? I joined in January 1991. I am willing to help in any way I can. I have donated flowers (for many Farm Bureau events and activities.) Ellen received the county Farm Woman of the Year award last month.

Tell us about your farm: We bought our farm in 1978. We started with grain farming, then we added hogs. We added vegetables and truck farming and stopped raising hogs, then we started our first greenhouse. We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, sweet corn, pumpkins, peppers, okra, tomatoes and peppers.

Community involvement: We help with FFA at several schools. We help the Boy Scouts by donating shrubs and trees so they can earn their Eagle Scout award. We help at the Clermont County Fairgrounds, the Clermont County Sheriff’s office and with seniors, to name a few. I donate a lot to churches and to 4-H. I received the Farm Bureau Good Neighbor award in 2000 and other awards from FFA, Lion’s Club and various schools.

Plans for the farm: To expand our grain farm.

My legacy: I want to be known as a person who helps people.

Grant Family Recipe
Fried Okra and Green Tomatoes

2 pounds homegrown okra
2 pounds green tomatoes
½ cup cornmeal
½ cup to 1 cup vegetable oil
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper

Wash and dry okra pods and slice into 1/8 inch slices. Dice the tomatoes. Mix okra and tomatoes and add cornmeal, salt and pepper. Heat oil in a large skillet and add okra mixture. Fry gently for about 25 minutes, stirring every 5 to 7 minutes.
