Three years ago Russ Beckner started the Southwest Ohio Chapter of the FS4JK (Farm Safety 4 Just Kids) organization. He received the 2010 Outstanding New Chapter of the Year award and continues to share farm safety information with area adults and youth. Beckner was a technical trainer in industry for many years and composed the phrase “If a picture is worth a thousand words, a demonstration is worth a thousand pictures.” This concept has proven to be effective with children also, especially if they are allowed to take an active role. Joe Conrad, a local Nationwide Insurance agent, has been one of the chapter’s financial sponsors since it began and continues to support Beckner’s efforts.
The national organization was founded 26 years ago by Marilyn Adams, an Iowa resident, whose son died in a grain-filled gravity wagon accident on their family’s farm.
