Mike Schumm, an Ohio Farm Bureau state trustee, teaches kids about ag as part of the projects developed by his council.

A Community Council in action

Members of the council visited the three schools in the county and partnered with the Lincoln View FFA to present to 260 second graders. They focused their discussion on the 2012 Ohio Farm Bureau’s Award for Children’s Literature Award Winner – How Did That Get In My Lunchbox? The Story of Food by Chris Butterworth. The book takes a clear, engaging look at the steps involved in producing some common foods. Healthy tips and a peek at basic food groups complete the menu. It is written for reading level age 5-8 and grades K-2nd. As part of the program, the book is presented to the classroom. Mike Schumm, council member, said that he also shares with the students other products that are produced by farmers and farm products, such as leather, plastics and hand lotion. Farmers R Us council members have been engaged in helping in the classroom for over 10 years but decided this year that they would take this project on as a Community Council project.
