Vegetable Gardening Hangout — my three takeaways

While I’m not a gardening expert, I do like to grow food, so as the moderator, I was excited to visit with two experienced gardeners: Pam Bennett from Ohio State University Extension and Bren Haas of

Here are a few of my takeaways:

  • I’m in the dark when it comes to insects. Pam shared a couple slides of beneficial insects. I was disappointed to learn I’m probably killing the good guys. When I see a bug on my garden treats, I assume it’s enjoying dinner, not standing guard. I have a lot to learn.

  • “Form follows Function” applies to gardening. All those beautiful shots of ribbon-wrapped trellises on Pinterest? Forget it. Find sturdy structures to stake your plants. I’m appreciative of my grandfather’s battered but durable tomato cages. They can stand up to summer storms while supporting beefsteaks. Maybe I’ll coat them with glitter.

  • I like talking about gardening almost as much as I like gardening. This might be true of most of my interests. I enjoy discussing challenges and sharing experiences with other enthusiasts. I can learn, make new friends and improve my garden!

Watch the entire Hangout below, and feel free to share your takeaways in the comments at the bottom of the page.
