July 20 Farm to Plate Chef announced: Ed Pickens

Hazel Grove Farm Bureau Community Council is pleased to announce our first guest chef demonstration for the Richland County Farm to Plate Project July 20. The demonstration will be held at the Shelby Farmers Market at 10 a.m. by Ed Pickens of Ed Pickens’ Cafe on Main in Mansfield.

His restaurant and catering business are both located at 28 N. Main, Mansfield. Ed became involved in cooking at a young age. His first cooking job was part time at Shakey’s Pizza. He then worked at Lums Restaurant in Mansfield. Ed attended catering conferences and classes to build his skills. He worked in restaurants and did catering through restaurants like the Surrey Inn in Ashland, Short Ribs in Mansfield, and then Schmidt’s of Columbus.

Pickens then opened his own catering kitchen and has been serving Mansfield for the past 20 years. Five and a half years ago he moved his catering business and opened a restaurant at his current address. Visit online at “like” them on Facebook for the daily specials. Ed reports that he enjoys grilling the most. He is going to grill and teach us all to create a Chicken Cesar Salad July 20. Ed has also told the volunteers to “surprise” him with a basket of fresh vegetables offered at the Farm Market that day and he will demonstrate how to grill fresh from the farm. When Ed was asked why he wanted to cook this chicken dish, he replied “because it tastes good.” Come and enjoy Ed’s recipes, cooking tips, and his anecdotes.

Richland County Farm to Plate is a program that will occur as part of the Farmer’s Market in Shelby. A host of partners, supporters and volunteers have joined together to provide this exciting program to link the growers of our local foods with local chefs and with us, the consumer. Cooking demonstrations, featuring items that can be found at the Farmer’s Market or through local sources, will occur on six occasions this summer. Taste testing, recipes and starter kits will be available. There will be healthy activities for the kids too. This is a great opportunity to learn about and support our local food economy, and to be newly inspired to eat healthy and to eat fresh.
