For many years one or two statewide events for Ohio Farm Bureau’s Young Agricultural Professionals (YAP) represented most of the opportunities specifically for Farm Bureau members ages 18-35. Now many county level YAP groups are beginning to form or to become established parts of their county Farm Bureau’s programming.
“We do a lot of things as a state group, but that isn’t always the best way to pull people in,” Danielle Burch, a member of the statewide YAP advisory team, said at the first meeting of a group in the beginning stages of development in Summit County.
She went on to explain that she has been approaching boards in about 16 counties in northeast Ohio to pitch the idea of a county YAP group, if they don’t already have one.
Burch discussed what other counties are doing with their YAP groups but spent the majority of the Summit County meeting discussing with attendees what they want to see happen and what they want to get out of their local YAP group.
The group discussed wanting network and social opportunities with the group as well as opportunities to learn new things and to teach others about food and farming.
The Summit County YAP meeting ended with the small group gathering to discuss where they wanted to go from that meeting and starting a list of ideas for future activities for their group.
While Summit County and several other counties are just starting their YAP groups, there are other counties that have established YAP groups. Contact your county Farm Bureau to learn more about its YAP activities or if you would like to start your own group.
