Growing Our Generation: Farmers market and show pigs

We are Derek and Emily Schmitt of Fairfield County. We have two beautiful daughters, Aubrey, 2 1/2, and Kinsley, 1, and we both work full time off the far — Derek as a purchasing agent for the Department of Defense and Emily as a preschool teacher. We are past members of the Ohio Farm Bureau Young Ag Professionals state committee, and Derek recently was elected president of Fairfield County Farm Bureau.

Our main focus on our farm is a show pig operation that we partner on with Derek’s brother. The show pig herd has consistently grown since our first gilt purchase in 2012. The main outlet for our show pigs are direct off the farm sales to local youth for the county fair, but we also have an online sale each spring to market pigs for national and state level shows.

Along with our show pigs, we have several other adventures that we pursue. Laying hens, heirloom vegetables, and homemade jams keep us busy, all of which we sell off of the farm and at a local farmers market.
