The Board of Trustees of Ashland County Farm Bureau is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 scholarships annually provided by the Farm Bureau members. Deserving students who are high school seniors preparing to pursue either college or technical education are recommended by a committee of community leaders and then approved by the trustees. Recipients must be members of Ashland County Farm Bureau and are chosen on qualities of academic performance and community involvement. Preference is given to students pursuing studies leading to a career in an agricultural field. The recipients of the 2016 scholarships are:
Bethany Heiby, daughter of Mick and Ellen Heiby of Perrysville. Bethany is a senior at Hillsdale High School and will be attending Wilmington College this fall majoring in Agricultural Business. She is currently enrolled in advanced placement courses in the BioScience – NOW program of North Central State College and will receive her Associate Degree in May at the same time she graduates from high school. At Hillsdale, Bethany has been on the honor roll all four years and has played on the school softball team. She is a ten year member of 4-H and is also involved in FFA, serving in various offices in both organizations.
Jenna Purvis, daughter of Steve and Kelly Purvis of Ashland. Kelly is a senior at Crestview High School and will be attending The Ohio State University (Mansfield campus) this fall majoring in Agricultural Science Education. At Crestview Jenna is on the honor roll, a scholar athlete, and teen Elk of the month. She has earned three varsity letters in softball, is president of her FFA chapter, a state FFA degree recipient, and numerous other awards. Her list of volunteer activities in both school and community is too long to list here.
Kate McGovern, daughter of Kent and Sheri McGovern of Jeromesville. Kate is a senior at Hillsdale High School and will be attending the University of Findlay this fall majoring in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary. At Hillsdale Kate is on the honor roll – all A’s distinction, in FFA – receiving the Outstanding Senior Award, auxiliary captain of the school band, and in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has been in 4-H for eleven years – holding virtually every office in her club. She has served on the Ashland Junior Fair Board including a term as vice-president.
