#TakeOverTuesday: Angel Family Farms LLC, Tuscarawas County

Every Tuesday an Ohio Farm Bureau member takes over the Ohio Farm Bureau Instagram for the day to share a day in their life. Check in through out the day or follow us on Instagram, @OhioFarmBureau,  to meet new Ohio farmers and ag professionals every #TakeOverTuesday.

Hello Everyone! We are Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Eastern Ohio for #TakeOverTuesday! We are currently in our 8th month of being farmers and what and adventure it has been! We both have a background in agriculture but did not grow up on farms, though Jonathan’s parents owned his grandparents’ farm. Both of us also work full time off the Farm. Jonathan is a large animal veterinarian and I am a grain merchandiser. Our goal is to sell farm products directly to consumers to help connect them with agriculture. We hope to utilize a niche market to share the story of agriculture! #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Tuscarawas County. On our farm we have about 20 beehives. We were very blessed that Jonathan’s father had an interest in beekeeping and had some well established hives on the farm before we ever got started. This year has been an excellent year for our bees. We only lost one small hive over the winter and all of our hives are thriving this spring! Of course the best part of having bees is getting to eat the delicious honey! #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Tuscarawas County. Currently on our farm we raise produce, honey bees, laying hens and registered Hereford Cattle. We sell our produce directly to consumers through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), farmers markets and by word of mouth off the farm. Selling at farmers markets gives us the chance to face-to-face with our customers and answer some of the questions they may have about how their food is raised. We never want to undermine one method of production over another, but we want consumers to have the correct information. #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Tuscarawas County. When you start out farming there is a HUGE learning curve. One of the many things we have had to learn how to do was build fencing. After we paid someone to build our first section of fencing, Jonathan decided that he and his dad could tackle the next section of fencing by themselves. We have had an enormous amount of help from friends, neighbors, family and area farmers in learning the skills we need to make our farm successful. The support from our local agricultural community has been incredible. #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Tuscarawas County. Community Supported Agriculture or a CSA is where customers pay ahead of the summer growing season and receive vegetables, fruits and a variety of other farm produced items each week throughout the season. By paying ahead of the season, the customer is sharing in the risk with the farmer while also guaranteeing that the farmer has a market for their goods. We only took a few members this year but are hoping to double the size of our CSA next year! #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Tuscarawas County. We have had a blast taking over Ohio Farm Bureau’s Instagram account today and we hope you enjoyed hearing our story! We wanted to send you off with a picture of one of the unsung heroes of the farm; the farm cat. This particular cat is affectionately called “Jay-Z” and he is one of the best hunters I’ve ever seen. He does an excellent job of protecting our produce, animal feed and house from rodents and other pests. #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shana and Jonathan from Angel Family Farms LLC in Tuscarawas County.
