Join us for the 2016 Shelby County Drive-It-Yourself Farm Tour on Sunday, September 18 from 1-5pm. This year’s tour will have five stops in Southeastern Shelby County, Perry, Orange and Green Townships. The stops include….
Kimberly and Eric Voress have grown to enjoy raising sheep. Since they were young their families have raised and shown sheep and now are passing down the tradition to their daughters. Along with sheep, the family also raise beef cattle and grow corn, soybeans and hay. They have many goals for their sheep operation, though producing low maintenance sheep and reducing the cost of production are the main two. The family’s sheep and beef cattle graze on 30 acres of pasture in a multi-paddock forage management system.
Dell Delight Farms
Randy and Connie Sailor are currently operating their family farm that has been in business since 1918. In 1973 the family built a milking parlor that has recently been updated, along with building a calf barn in 2012. The Sailor family farms 1,400 acres of a variety of different crops such as: corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and hay, where different practices are in use like conservation tillage. The family also milks a 100 cow herd. The cows are pasture based spending a majority of their time on grass. The heifer and bull calves are raised to maturity on their farm. At this stop you will get to see the feeding of baby calves, milking at 4:15PM and many jobs that are a part of life on a dairy farm. The Shelby Co. Dairy Boosters will be serving FREE ice cream.
The Everett family are fourth generation grain farmers in Green Township. This family’s main crops are corn and soybeans. Their modern facility includes a 300,000 bushel grain storage facility as well as bulk fertilizer, fuel and propane tanks. Their farm machinery utilizes current technology and is set-up with auto-steer. The Everett Family has also installed a GPS satellite on top of their grain leg to help serve area farmers. The Shelby Co. Pork Producers will be serving FREE samples.
Bambauer Fertilizer & Seed
The Bambauer Family started their business in 1958, and today it is in its fourth generation and has expanded to three different locations: New Knoxville, Jackson Center and Pemberton. Bambauer Fertilizer & Seed serves farmers in seven different counties with the help of their 40 employees. With the constant change in the industry, the family business has been able to adapt and take advantage of the opportunities that change has offered. In 2007, the family business started their own research farm near their Pemberton location. There they are able to look at different products and practices to get solid data to help guide the recommendations that they give to their customers. Bring the family and find out what Bambauer Fertilizer & Seed has to offer!
Farm Tour guests have an opportunity to experience the University of Dayton’s “RiverMobile”, a mobile learning center. The RiverMobile is a traveling exhibit contained in an air conditioned semi-trailer that highlights the history, benefits and preservation of the Great Miami River watershed. Guided tours of the five learning stations (Exploring Our Watershed, History, Aquifer, Rivers and Global Impact) will be given starting at 1, 2, 3 and 4 PM. In addition, Fairlawn FFA and FCCLA, Shelby Co. Master Gardeners, Shelby Soil and Water Conservation District and USDA, NRCS will be offering FREE hands-on activities for all ages to learn more about agriculture. FREE samples of delicious beef will be shared with guests courtesy of the Shelby County Cattlemen’s Association.
