Below is a message from Jordan Hoewischer, OFBF director of water quailty and research:

Welcome to #WaterWednesday! Once a month we will share one of our many impactful water quality projects around the state. Today’s project is the Blanchard River Demonstrations Farms Network. The demo farms are a trio of farms in partnership between OFBF and USDA-NRCS to demonstration and showcase leading edge conservation practices to improve Great Lakes water quality. The farms will be open periodically for farmers, local residents, legislators and media members to get an up-close took at what farmers are doing to project water quality.

Duane and Anthony Stateler own and operate Stateler Family Farms in McComb, Ohio. The Statelers farm corn, soybeans, and wheat on approximately 500 acres and also operate a 7,200 head wean to finish swine operation. They have committed 243 acres to the Blanchard River Demonstrations Farms network with an emphasis on nutrient and drainage water management, cover crops, pollinator habitats, and Edge of Field monitoring. The Blanchard River Demonstrations Farms Network is today’s highlight on #WaterWednesday.

Chris Kurt owns and operates Kurt Farms in Dunkirk, Ohio where he farms soybeans and corn on 470 acres. Chris has committed 168 acres to the Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network. His main focus will be drainage water management, cover crops, phosphorus removal beds, and Edge of Field monitoring. Kurt farms already has a two stage ditch from previous conservation work done by The Nature Conservancy. The Blanchard River Demonstrations Farms Network is today’s highlight on #WaterWednesday.

Kellogg Farms, owned and operated by Bill and Shane Kellogg of Forest, Ohio consists of 4,200 acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat. The Kelloggs committed 305 acres to the Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network with emphasis on cover crops, reduced tillage, abandoned water well removal, and subsurface nutrient placement. The Blanchard River Demonstrations Farms Network is today’s highlight on #WaterWednesday.
