Mercer County celebrated spring by bringing agriculture into the county’s second grade classrooms. This project is in its first year provided each county second grader an “ag bag” along with supporting the classrooms with ag literature and lesson plans.
The theme was centered around the agriculture literature book “First Peas to the Table” by Susan Grisby. Classes received the book, agriculture lesson plans and a root view table top garden to learn more about plant growth. Students also received their own packet of peas to plant.
In addition to the classroom materials, each student also received a bag filled with information about agriculture commodities, fun activities and agriculture novelties. Countywide over 700 bags were distributed into the schools.
“This project is a fun easy way to introduce agriculture to our young people ” said Mercer County Communications Chairman Lisa Kahlig.
The county would like to thank the Ft. Recovery FFA for putting together the bags and the Coldwater FFA for their education efforts.
