Dorset wool is a medium fiber wool that spins easily. It is considered one of the softest breeds in the Down classification of wool types. The fleeces are lofty, air-trapping, and very warm, with locks and minimal crimp in the raw fleece. It is commonly used for long-wearing socks, sweaters, and other outer garments. It is our flock’s normal shelter. It keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Each Spring, just before lambing, we shear our sheep and send it to our woolen mill. Our blankets, yarn, and roving start as raw wool from our sheep. First, the wool is washed with liquid soap and hot water. Raw wool contains 10 to 25 percent grease or “lanolin,” which is recovered during the scouring process. After the wool is washed, it weighs almost forty percent less, now that the dirt and grease are out. The wool is then dried.A carding machine combs and brushes the wool into roving material. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Spicy Lamb Farm in Summit County. The wool is then spun into yarn. The wool yarn is warped onto a loom. Sixteen hundred warp threads make up a blanket, and each one is fed through a loom. After the blankets are preshrunk in steaming hot soap and water, they are hung to dry in the dry house, and brushed again to make them fluffy, then hemmed, folded and packaged for shipment back to the farm. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Spicy Lamb Farm in Summit County. The Spicy Lamb Farm is honored to host the annual Cuyahoga Valley Sheep Dog Trials. The Cuyahoga Valley Sheep Dog Trials (CVSDT) is a competitive trial in which herding dogs move sheep around a field, through gates, penning and shedding them as directed by their handlers. These trials have been held in this country since the 1880s. The CVSDT’s Open class is sanctioned by the United States Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA). . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Spicy Lamb Farm in Summit County. Our free range Rouen Duck has a rich flavor that makes a delicious and nutritious alternative to other meats. Duck fat has similar health benefits to olive oil and other unsaturated fats and is rendered out in cooking, creating a tasty and healthy dinner. Ducklings come fully processed and frozen for freshness with a giblet pack. The net weight is about 5-6 pounds. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Spicy Lamb Farm in Summit County. We have planted a tall spindle orchard with an assortment of apple and pear varieties. We also grow our own exotic and ethnic organic herbs and vegetables to complement lamb and duck dishes. To pollinate our trees, we also keep honey bees and harvest honey. Fresh flowers are also grown on the farm. These products are grown on The Spicy Lamb Farm and are only available during harvest season. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Spicy Lamb Farm in Summit County. Labor has always been an issue, mainly because we are a seasonal operation. So that's a challenge finding somebody who only wants to work three months out of a year, sometimes up to six months.

I appreciate the benefit of having a strong voice in my corner. The extras that are included in membership are wonderful, but I'm a member because of the positive impact to my local and state agricultural communities.

Farm Bureau involvement has taught me how to grow my professional and leadership experience outside of the workforce and how to do that in a community-centric way.

With not growing up on a farm, I’d say I was a late bloomer to agriculture. I feel so fortunate that I found the agriculture industry. There are so many opportunities for growth.

Growing our Generation
Knowing that horticulture is under the agriculture umbrella and having Farm Bureau supporting horticulture like it does the rest of ag is very important.

If it wasn't for Farm Bureau, I personally, along with many others, would not have had the opportunity to meet with our representatives face to face in Washington.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
