Every Tuesday an Ohio Farm Bureau member takes over the Ohio Farm Bureau Instagram for the day to share a day in their life. Check in throughout the day or follow us on Instagram, @OhioFarmBureau, to meet new Ohio farmers and ag professionals every #TakeOverTuesday.

Happy #TakeOverTuesday – we are the Shoups! Our family runs Shoup Brothers LLC, a farrow-to-finish swine operation spanning both Wayne and Ashland counties. We are eager to share our story with you and hope you enjoy a peek into our family’s business! . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. The original Shoup brothers, Bill and Bob, began hog production in the 1950s. Since then, our herd has grown to 3,500 sows. Our farrowing houses are setup to ensure piglets are in an environment that promotes health and safety. . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. Don leads the charge at our nursery. Pigs come in weighing around 12 pounds and stay until they’ve reached 60 pounds. . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. Swine production ends in the finishing barns. Our goal this fiscal year is to sell upwards of 80,000 hogs. Fun fact, if you’ve enjoyed bacon or sausage at @BobEvans, there’s a good chance it came from our pigs! . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. During planting and harvest seasons, you may also find a Shoup sitting behind the wheel of one of our tractors or in the seat of our combine. We grow corn, soy beans and wheat across 2,500 acres. And to no surprise, it takes teamwork, an abundance of sack launches, and plenty of coffee-filled thermoses to get it all done. . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. Our family has been heavily involved in 4-H and FFA at the Wayne County Fair. We’ve taken beef and dairy market steers, market lambs, and market hogs. It’s one of our favorite times of the year! . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. Educating the consumer is a passion our family shares. Last fall, our family participated in Wayne County’s Farm Tour giving community members a chance to better understand our business. We also welcomed @renees_kitchen_kdventures, a social influencer partnering with @ohiopork, to tour a swine operation – see the blog post of her visit on the OFBF website! . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. We don’t hesitate to get young family members introduced to the farm. Who knows, little Solomon might just be a future hog farmer! . . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Shoup Brothers LLC in Wayne and Ashland Counties. Labor has always been an issue, mainly because we are a seasonal operation. So that's a challenge finding somebody who only wants to work three months out of a year, sometimes up to six months.

I appreciate the benefit of having a strong voice in my corner. The extras that are included in membership are wonderful, but I'm a member because of the positive impact to my local and state agricultural communities.

Leadership development
Farm Bureau involvement has taught me how to grow my professional and leadership experience outside of the workforce and how to do that in a community-centric way.

With not growing up on a farm, I’d say I was a late bloomer to agriculture. I feel so fortunate that I found the agriculture industry. There are so many opportunities for growth.

Growing our Generation
Knowing that horticulture is under the agriculture umbrella and having Farm Bureau supporting horticulture like it does the rest of ag is very important.

If it wasn't for Farm Bureau, I personally, along with many others, would not have had the opportunity to meet with our representatives face to face in Washington.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
