Every Tuesday an Ohio Farm Bureau member takes over the Ohio Farm Bureau Instagram for the day to share a day in their life. Check in throughout the day or follow us on Instagram, @OhioFarmBureau, to meet new Ohio farmers and ag professionals every #TakeOverTuesday.

Hello! We are Haley and Jeff Reese with this week’s #TakeOverTuesday. Our family owns Kaleidoscope Farms in Hancock County. Jeff and I met on this bridge, so it was only appropriate to have a wedding picture on the bridge! This bridge connects customers at Kaleidoscope Farms to our back fields of trees. I am also an Organization Director for Ohio Farm Bureau in Hardin, Hancock, Seneca and Wyandot counties. . . .

The dream team of Kaleidoscope Farms- brothers Matt, Jay, Aaron and Jeff. The farm was started in 1983 when the brothers were just kids, and now their own kids are growing up on the farm, helping in nearly every aspect of the operation. . . .

At this summer’s Ohio Christmas Tree conference, Kaleidoscope Farm’s matriarch, Jan Reese, held a hawk that is used to hunt for rabbits and mice on a local Christmas Tree farm. . . .

Reindeer are a seasonal favorite every winter at Kaleidoscope Farms. Fun fact: Both male and female reindeer grow antlers. . . .

Jeff and I gave the gift shop a face lift this year by adding the farm’s brand new logo to the front of the barn. The family loved the addition, and so did our customers! . . .

There are hidden treasures all over the Kaleidoscope Farms. After a customer’s tree was cut down last season, our niece Hannah noticed this beautiful heart shaped- stump. We love it! . . .

Every spring, we plant seedlings, either bare root or plugs to replace trees that had died, or were cut out during the season. The average tree takes seven years to mature. You heard that right… seven years! . . .

Kaleidoscope Farms won Grand Champion Christmas Tree with this stunning Canaan Fir at this year’s Ohio State Fair. This win qualifies us to compete at the 2019 National Christmas Tree Conference in Pennsylvania. The winner of the national conference will get to display a Christmas Tree at the White House. . . .

This picture is just a quick snapshot of all of the work that must be done on Kaleidoscope Farms during the summer. We maintain the fence line, knock off pine cones, pull out grapevines and honeysuckle, spray for weeds and mow. Lots and lots of mowing. . . .

This semi is just one of the semis that shows up to Kaleidoscope Farms every year with pre-cut trees to be sold during season on the farm. We order pre-cut trees to supplement our trees in the field, and to provide sizes and tree varieties that we are not able to grow on the farm. . . .

Labor has always been an issue, mainly because we are a seasonal operation. So that's a challenge finding somebody who only wants to work three months out of a year, sometimes up to six months.

I appreciate the benefit of having a strong voice in my corner. The extras that are included in membership are wonderful, but I'm a member because of the positive impact to my local and state agricultural communities.

I see the value and need to be engaged in the community I live in, to be a part of the decision-making process and to volunteer with organizations that help make our community better.

Leadership development
Farm Bureau involvement has taught me how to grow my professional and leadership experience outside of the workforce and how to do that in a community-centric way.

With not growing up on a farm, I’d say I was a late bloomer to agriculture. I feel so fortunate that I found the agriculture industry. There are so many opportunities for growth.

Growing our Generation
Knowing that horticulture is under the agriculture umbrella and having Farm Bureau supporting horticulture like it does the rest of ag is very important.

If it wasn't for Farm Bureau, I personally, along with many others, would not have had the opportunity to meet with our representatives face to face in Washington.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
