Hello, everyone! I’m Bo Harstine, your host for this month’s #TakeOverTuesday! I’m the Director of Research at @selectsiresinc, a cattle genetics, and breeding company based in Union County. I live in Columbus with my wife, Katherine, but I grew up on my family’s 100-cow Holstein and Ayrshire dairy farm in Tuscarawas County. I’d be happy to answer any questions as we go through today’s posts. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. I want to introduce everyone to where I work: @selectsiresinc! We are based in Plain City, Ohio and are North America’s largest cattle artificial insemination (AI) organization. The company is comprised of seven farmer-owned and -controlled cooperatives, and we house around 2,000 genetically elite bulls of all ages here at our Ohio facilities. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. If anyone has seen artificial insemination (AI breeding) performed in dairy or beef cattle, then you’re probably familiar with what we sell! We collect around 160 bulls per day, package the semen into straws that we cryogenically freeze, and send the product to over 95 countries! In our laboratory, every collection undergoes strict quality control testing to be sure it has the best possibility of creating a baby calf (with excellent genetics, of course!). . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. Many of the world’s most valuable beef and dairy bulls live at @selectsiresinc, and we take great pride in providing them with the best care possible. Just like other farms with livestock, we observe and interact with our animals daily. Bulls are very different from cows (they can be dangerous!), and we house them individually for both employee and animal safety. The mature bulls are fed a Total Mixed Ration (TMR) just like cows on most dairy farms, and our staff veterinarians ensure all the bulls stay healthy. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. We receive our bulls when they are young calves, usually between 30 to 90 days old. Upon arriving from partner herds all over the United States, they settle into our state-of-the-art calf barns. These little bulls get cared for by a team of calf-rearing specialists in preparation to become the next generation of elite sires that will provide genetics for the dairy and beef industries! . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. I’m able to interact with many young people in agriculture, and I believe the future of food production is in good hands! Just within this year, I’ve enjoyed speaking at @OhioFarmBureau’s Young Ag Professional (YAP) Conference, serving as an adjunct faculty member at @osucfaes, becoming an @aggrad 30 under 30 member, and participating in Holstein Foundation’s Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) with several of my Ohio coworkers. . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. One of the things I enjoy most about my job is representing Ohio agriculture while traveling. I’ve been lucky to travel to many U.S. states and foreign countries to learn about their cattle production. Cattle breeds and management are different all over the world, but one thing is certain: farmers and animal scientists are some of the most passionate, friendly and hardworking people you will ever meet! . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County. Thanks for the opportunity to host #TakeOverTuesday! I hope everyone was able to learn something new about the cattle genetics industry, as well as how important Ohio-based agriculture is to the rest of the world. My wife and I are signing off with one of our favorite sweet treats, some wine from @breitenbachwinery, which is located right down the street from my family’s farm! . . #TakeOverTuesday this week is with Bo Harstine from Select Sires in Union County.
