Lake County Farm Bureau’s annual meeting was held Sept. 9, at The Kirtlander Party Center in Kirtland. Guest speaker, Ty Higgins, director of media relations with the Ohio Farm Bureau, was a great addition to our agenda with the many stories he shared.

Lake County 2019 Scholarship winner is Hannah Lucic, daughter of Steve and Lynne Lucic of Chardon. Hannah is a junior at The Ohio State University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal science.

Farm Bureau Special Awards:

The Lake County Farm Bureau recognized Mike DeCola, with its Distinguished Service to Ag Award for 2019. The county also nominated David Wilcox for the OFBF Lake County Member of Distinction for 2019. Dave will receive further recognition at the Ohio Farm Bureau annual meeting in December.

Trustee/Delegate Elections

Ted Clutter, Eric Cotton, Todd Demshar, Don Jacobson, Anne Poorman and Dave Wilcox were all re-elected as board trustees and Samantha Bly was elected as a new board trustee. Delegates elected for the 2020 Ohio Farm Bureau annual meeting were Sam Taylor and Eric Cotton, with Keith Shaffer as alternate.

The slate of policies for the upcoming year all passed, which will be used to form some of the county’s programming for 2020.

Purchases at the 4-H Livestock auction totaled $1,661.95 for 2019.

The annual meeting was a outstanding event, full of honoring our wonderful members, volunteers and youth.

Labor has always been an issue, mainly because we are a seasonal operation. So that's a challenge finding somebody who only wants to work three months out of a year, sometimes up to six months.

I appreciate the benefit of having a strong voice in my corner. The extras that are included in membership are wonderful, but I'm a member because of the positive impact to my local and state agricultural communities.

Strong communities
I see the value and need to be engaged in the community I live in, to be a part of the decision-making process and to volunteer with organizations that help make our community better.

Leadership development
Farm Bureau involvement has taught me how to grow my professional and leadership experience outside of the workforce and how to do that in a community-centric way.

Young Ag Professionals program
With not growing up on a farm, I’d say I was a late bloomer to agriculture. I feel so fortunate that I found the agriculture industry. There are so many opportunities for growth.

Growing our Generation
Knowing that horticulture is under the agriculture umbrella and having Farm Bureau supporting horticulture like it does the rest of ag is very important.

If it wasn't for Farm Bureau, I personally, along with many others, would not have had the opportunity to meet with our representatives face to face in Washington.

Washington, D.C. Leadership Experience
So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
