From District 15 state board member Mike Videkovich:

We hope you are enduring summer’s heat these days and hopefully benefited from the pop up showers this week. We held an OFBF board meeting July 7 and Jenny Cox, your regional trustee, and I wanted to report back to you on the meeting.

Our meeting was originally planned for June 19 but was postponed due to the unexpected passing of our friend and colleague Yvonne Lesicko. Our meeting this week was an abbreviated conference call/video format. Nevertheless, we covered many important topics. Ohio Farm Bureau has prepared this overview.

Yvonne Lesicko Memorial Fund
We were all shocked by the loss of Yvonne Lesicko, Ohio Farm Bureau’s vice president of public policy. She passed away from an unexpected medical issue June 18. Yvonne’s impact on our organization was immense and of course we continue to pray for her husband, Scott and son, Oscar. You can read more about Yvonne.

In her honor, her family has established the Yvonne Lesicko Memorial Fund with the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation. This fund was established to support the causes and initiatives that she cared so deeply about, including but not limited to, farmer mental health, women in leadership, agricultural and environmental policy and youth scholarships.

Justices French and Kennedy
A coalition of five statewide business advocacy organizations, including Ohio Farm Bureau AGGPAC, announced its endorsement of Justices Judi French and Sharon Kennedy for re-election to the Ohio Supreme Court. Justices on the seven-member Supreme Court are elected on a non-partisan basis to six-year terms. With the exception of Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, Justices French and Kennedy are the longest-tenured justices on the Supreme Court, which has experienced significant turnover in recent years. As you examine the candidates vying for your votes at all levels of government this November, the importance of the judicial branch should not be overlooked. Whether you are a farmer, consumer, landowner, taxpayer, employer or employee, the results of Ohio Supreme Court decisions affect all of us. Watch for our full election guide in the September/October issue of Our Ohio.

Labor has always been an issue, mainly because we are a seasonal operation. So that's a challenge finding somebody who only wants to work three months out of a year, sometimes up to six months.

I appreciate the benefit of having a strong voice in my corner. The extras that are included in membership are wonderful, but I'm a member because of the positive impact to my local and state agricultural communities.

I see the value and need to be engaged in the community I live in, to be a part of the decision-making process and to volunteer with organizations that help make our community better.

Leadership development
Farm Bureau involvement has taught me how to grow my professional and leadership experience outside of the workforce and how to do that in a community-centric way.

With not growing up on a farm, I’d say I was a late bloomer to agriculture. I feel so fortunate that I found the agriculture industry. There are so many opportunities for growth.

Growing our Generation
Knowing that horticulture is under the agriculture umbrella and having Farm Bureau supporting horticulture like it does the rest of ag is very important.

If it wasn't for Farm Bureau, I personally, along with many others, would not have had the opportunity to meet with our representatives face to face in Washington.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
