The Hazelgrove Farm Bureau Community Council is proud to announce Week Two’s featured chef, Carrie Bisel. The 2017 event series at the Shelby Farmers Market features local chefs preparing foods while sharing cooking tips and menu ideas to help maximize the use of seasonal, local foods found at farmers’ markets.

Bisel is one of the members of the Hazelgrove Community Council and has been for a number of years, along with her parents and other family members.

Bisel reports that as long as she can remember, she has loved to cook. She learned some things while in 4-H, but most of her experience comes from her family life where she helped her mom with the meals, tended a very large family garden and canned and froze produce. Bisel said she tries to follow her mom’s lead by having a large garden, preserving the produce she has grown and raising chickens for eggs and meat.

Before becoming a chef, Biselworked for 21 years with Miami Systems in Shelby. When the company moved to Cincinnati, she followed her job to Blue Ash (a suburb of Cincinnati). When her daughter graduated from high school, they started to look for further schooling. One of the places they toured was the Midwest Culinary Institute in Cincinnati. Her daughter chose a different path, but Bisel decided to follow her own dreams and enrolled in MCI. She said the co-op experience was excellent for learning techniques, seeing a wide variety of cuisines and helping with different occasions and different sizes.

After receiving her degree, Bisel returned to Shelby to be near her family and develop her own farm. Bisel said she “tries to follow organic practices and to grow the best food.” She plans to eventually participate as one of the farmers at the Shelby Farmers Market.

Currently Bisel is the dining services director of Elmcroft of Ontario, an assisted living center.

The event will also feature our new youth division with chefs Rees Lewis and Eve Schwemley. They will be demonstrating how to prepare The Best Fruit Dip Ever.

Rees is the daughter of Patrick and Patience Lewis. Lewis will be a 5th grader at Shelby Middle School. She enjoys playing with her friends, swimming, basketball and softball. She also enjoys art.

Eve is the daughter of Troy and Gwen Schwemley. Schwemley will also be a 5th grader next year at Shelby Middle School. She enjoys gymnastics, playing outdoors and baking.

Rees and Eve have teamed up with the Pioneer/Shelby Middle School Family Consumer Science Department to share a healthy snack. The Best Fruit Dip Ever has three simple ingredients that create a delicious and fluffy dip – low fat vanilla yogurt, vanilla pudding mix and whipped topping. The recipe details can be found online.

Farm to Plate is brought to the community by the Hazelgrove Farm Bureau Community Council, Shelby Farmers Market, Richland County Farm Bureau, Shelby FFA, Shelby Foundation, Richland County Creating Healthy Communities and Richland Community Development Group.

The program is provided at no cost to attendees.
