Knox County Executive Director for Farm Service Agency, Katie Hill, invites you to visit Farm First Friday. The Celebrity Pie Throwing Contest will be one of many highlights of Farm First Friday hosted by the Knox County Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Knox Soil and Water Conservation District Sept. 1 from 6-9 in downtown Mt. Vernon.

Agriculture will descend down the 100 block of Main Street starting at the First-Knox’s parking lot during the First Friday event. The 100 block of Main St. will be filled with machinery, animals, displays, agricultural activities, and agriculture vendors and organizations. All booths will have a short hands-on activity or display to teach kids and their parents about how our food gets from the farmers field to the grocery store.

soilKids and parents can learn how a cow is milked, sit on tractors and learn about how they are used in the fields around Knox County, and talk with farmers and ask answer questions on what it takes to bring our food from fields to dinner plates. Local orchards will have apples on hand, maple syrup producers will show the process of how syrup is made and have maple cotton candy, and the Bee Keepers Association will show how bees pollinate plants to make food. Guests can also visit vendors from the farmers market, learn about soil erosion, ethanol vehicles and corn products, why the farm bill is important to us all, see by-products from the Cattleman’s and Sheep Improvement Association, food safety, cooking demos, pedal tractor races, and much more.

This event is brought to you by Knox County’s agricultural industry to help facilitate understanding the importance of agriculture in our community and beyond.
